It is hard not to notice the extensive media coverage on the impact that plastic waste is having on our environment. The UK media giant, Sky, launched its Sky Ocean Rescue campaign on 24 January 2017 and Sir David Attenborough has urged everyone to cut back on the use of single use plastic in order to protect our oceans and their marine life. Sir David's new BBC TV series, Blue Planet II, demonstrates the damage that discarded plastics are causing to marine life.
According to Sky, every minute, the equivalent of a rubbish truck load of plastic goes in to our oceans, it never decomposes and will remain there forever. Sky says that if nothing changes, by 2050 all the plastic in the ocean could weigh more than all the fish. It is no secret that our oceans' health affects us all so we need to come together to take action and protect our oceans.

At Noggins & Binkles, in addition to our commitment to manufacture our products using entirely vegan materials (see our post on this here), sustainability and environmental protection are also high on our agenda. Whilst we know that we can only ever play a very small part in helping the reduction in plastic and other waste materials in our environment, we believe that it is still important to do whatever we can to limit our own negative impact on the environment in which we and our four legged friends live.
Whilst our current range of cat collars, dog collars, cat harnesses, leads and leashes already use vegan, natural and sustainably sourced materials such as cork, cotton and Piñatex®, a lot of thought has also gone into our cat toy collection. All of our cat toys are made with the environment in mind including the felt outer and filling of our organic catnip recycled vegan felt cat toys, which are made from recycled single use polyethylene terephthalate, more commonly known to most people as PET. Not only does this mean that our toys are made entirely from recycled materials but they are also fully recyclable as well as having our usual vegan credentials. As a result, once your furry friend has had as much enjoyment as he or she can get from his or her toy, you have peace of mind that it can be recycled rather than be sent to landfill.

The environmental benefits of using recycled PET are numerous and go far beyond the simple fact that every PET bottle recycled into another product is one less PET bottle floating around in our oceans or filling up our landfills. Recycle Now explains that recycling PET leads to a conservation of raw materials and requires far less energy than making a brand new PET bottle from primary raw materials. If that isn't a good enough reason to make our products in the way that we do, then we don't know what is! Of course if we as a world could use less plastic that would be even better, but it's important that the plastic that we do use is recycled responsibly and doesn't end up polluting our planet and seas.

Our commitment to do our bit for the environment goes beyond our products themselves. We ensure that all of our packaging materials that we use are not only made of sustainable and recycled materials but are also fully recyclable. We also don't use any plastic in our packaging. This means that when you receive your beautiful new pet accessories from us, you know that you can recycle the packaging in a way that minimises the impact that you have on environment.
